Arun Shourie, LLM

Arun is a founding partner of Shourie Bhatia LLP and has been practising law internationally for over 15 years. Before his admission to the Alberta Bar in 2005 he practised law in New Delhi, India. Arun's work in Alberta encompasses the day to day functioning of his Corporate/Commercial clients. His clientele include small to large and new to old business operations including many local, provincial and national focussed entrepreneurs.

Academically, Arun has an undergraduate degree in Commerce and an LLB from India. He completed his Masters Degree (LLM) in Law from McGill University before permanently settling in Edmonton, Alberta where he articled and practised law at Ogilvie LLP, a large full-service firm in Edmonton, before branching out and founding Shourie Bhatia LLP.

Nitin Bhatia, BCom (Dist.), LLB

Nitin Bhatia is born in Edmonton, Alberta and is one of the founding partners of Shourie Bhatia LLP. Nitin has a practise which is highly focused on transactional files both in the corporate securities and banking sector and the commercial real estate sector where he is involved in mortgage financing, leasing and development work. His expertise sees him working with a clientele that includes major financial lenders, smaller scaled private lenders, chartered banks and credit unions and members of the Alberta Real Estate Association. Additionally, Nitin is also intricately involved in matters relating to business purchase and sale transactions - with a larger focus on franchise related purchase and sales. Above and beyond his practise areas, Nitin is involved in working with our group of lawyers on a variety of litigation, family and personal estate related matters for clients within Alberta.

Nitin has been a sessional instructor at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Business and is currently a sessional instructor at the University of Alberta's prestigious Faculty of Law in the areas of Commercial Real Estate and Financing. In addition to his work at Shourie Bhatia LLP and with the University of Alberta, Nitin currently serves as a Director for the Valley Zoo Development Society (VZDS) and with the Maanaw Seva Association (MSA).

Jack Hauptman BA, LLB

Jack has been practicing law for over 35 years. His roots in Edmonton run deep. He was born and raised here and graduated from the University of Alberta. He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1973.

Jack was a partner at the firm of Hauptman Hart Cherkawsky and then Hauptman Cherkawsky Hobbs from 1977 to 2012. During his legal career he obtained experience in many areas of the law including criminal and civil litigation, residential real estate transactions, builders liens, wrongful dismissal, employment issues, and family law.

Since 1990 Jack has concentrated his practice on the area of family law and since 2002 on the area of Collaborative Divorce and Mediation. His experience, training and expertise sees him working with clients who are often business owners, executives, professionals and senior employees or their spouses who are going through divorce. He works collaboratively with other similarly trained lawyers to create unique settlements and, if possible, avoid litigation.

Jack is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Association of Collaborative Professionals. He has been actively involved in the continuing legal education of lawyers and has presented papers on a variety of topics. Jack taught the Parenting After Separation Seminar for 10 years and is a Child Support Resolution Officer.

In his free time Jack enjoys his grandchildren, travel, curling, photography and woodworking. He is an avid Edmonton Eskimo fan and has had season tickets for well over 35 years.

Randy Hobbs, BSc, LLB

Randy Hobbs has practiced law in Edmonton for almost 30 years, and has recently moved his practice to the law firm of Shourie Bhatia. His practice includes Wills, Estate Planning, and Trusts, and he has extensive experience with Estate Administration and Probate Law, and Estate Litigation. Additionally, he represents numerous clients in farm, residential, and commercial real estate matters, and condominium issues.

Randy Hobbs graduated from the University of Alberta Law School, with a Bachelor of Science (Hons. Biochemistry) Degree. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association Wills and Estates subsection.

Randy Hobbs is a board member and Secretary/Treasurer for the Society for Safe and Caring Schools and Communities (SACSC) which is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to violence prevention and character education for youth. Randy has coached youth fastball at the provincial and national level, and continues to enjoy playing recreational slo-pitch.

Roshan Kalra, MBA, JD

Roshan is a lawyer at Shourie Bhatia having completed his JD/MBA at Queen's University. He has had the opportunity to study law on three continents, through an International Business Law certification at the Bader International Study Centre in England and an exchange at the University of Hong Kong. Prior to his combined program, Roshan obtained his Bachelor of Commerce in Business Economics and Business Law at the University of Alberta. Roshan focuses his practice primarily on transactional matters related to corporate/commercial purchase & sales, and residential & commercial real estate. His files see him working with a variety of small-to-mid sized business owners, lenders and land developers in crafting strategies to grow their businesses. As part of his practice, Roshan also handles immigration-related matters at the firm.

Roshan is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, Canadian Bar Association and currently serves as President of Business Networking International (Alliance). He previously served as the President of the Sports & Entertainment Law Society at Queen's University.

In his free time, Roshan enjoys travelling, squash, ball hockey, and the challenge of playing golf. He is fluent in both Hindi and Punjabi.

Harman S. Kandola, LLB

Harman is a lawyer at Shourie Bhatia LLP having completed his JD and Bachelor of Commerce in Business Law & Economics at the University of Alberta. Harman focuses his practice primarily on litigation matters related to commercial and civil disputes. He works closely with other lawyers within the firm as part of a cross-disciplinary team, drawing on the skills and knowledge of lawyers in tax, commercial transactions, banking and finance, securities, intellectual property and other areas as the need arises. He also has experience in the conflict resolution models of arbitration and mediation. He represents clients before all levels of Alberta's Courts as well as the Securities Commission and the Tax Court.

Harman is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, and the Canadian Bar Association.

Harman is fluent in in both Hindi and Punjabi. He is passionate about protecting individual rights and fighting inequality as an advocate for families and vulnerable youth. In his free time, Harman dedicates himself to public service and is currently a member of SEVA Food Truck, the World Sikh Organization, Punjabi Sports Association, and the Indo Canadian Liaison Committee for the Edmonton Police Service.

Wayne Fidyk, LLM

Wayne’s legal experience was gained working across various commercial markets such as London, U.K., Frankfurt, Germany, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Honk Kong, Edmonton and Calgary in both leading domestic and international law firms and managing the legal function within financial institutions and corporations advising commercially sophisticated internal and external clients such as prominent commercial and investment banks, private equity firms and funds, real-estate, developers, and corporations undertaking domestic and cross-border business on a diverse range of corporate and commercial matters.

Wayne possesses significant energy sector experience which includes matters relating to the supply of various goods and services, procurement and storage issues, as well as transportation and delivery of goods and services (including Incoterms and transfer of risk, title, in both Canada, the U.S., and globally etc.), and commercial indemnities and limitations of liability, warranties and remedies, tenders, bid and performance bonds, letters of credit, commercial guarantees, privacy matters, dispute resolution, etc.

Wayne’s real estate experience includes the acquisition, development, and disposition, leasing, financing (e.g., through the raising of private capital and mortgage finance), and securitization of commercial real estate such as office buildings, industrial properties, residential housing subdivisions and multi-family condominium properties as well as distressed commercial real estate projects. Wayne’s experience with real estate financing includes traditional mortgaged financing, construction financing and other alternatives, such as vendor take-backs, etc. Wayne’s real estate experience extends to negotiating development agreements with civic authorities, the imposition, transfer and removal of secured interests, undivided interests, and various forms of encumbrances on title, development planning issues, and commercial real estate brokerage issues, etc.

Wayne’s finance and investment experience includes the formation and investment into of private equity funds (e.g., representing general partners in respect of inward investments by limited partners and representing limited partners in respect of their investment into private equity funds across real estate, infrastructure and traditional asset classes, transactional and fund-based investment (e.g., mergers & acquisitions), the structuring of banking products and services (including discretionary and non-discretionary services), corporate finance, derivatives arrangements, banking facilities arrangements, large scale construction projects and project finance, capital markets (e.g., initial public offerings), and brokerage arrangements, etc.

Wayne also possesses other more general commercial experience over matters such as incorporated and contractual joint ventures, intellectual property and confidentiality matters, consulting arrangements, franchises, commercial agencies and settlements, etc.

In connection with the foregoing matters Wayne has specialized expertise in transaction and deal negotiation, the drafting of relevant legal and commercial documentation, the development and implementation of corporate policies, and formal internal processes for processing of internal and external agreements, legal and commercial risk mitigation, litigation management, and the interpretation, monitoring and application of relevant regulations and commercial trends affecting various business activities.

Michael A. Murray, BPA Hons, JD

Michael completed his Bachelor of Public Administration at York University, and his Juris Doctor at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law. During his time in law school, Michael was a member of the Varsity golf team. As part of this team for 3 years, he competed in national and international tournaments. Michael applies this same drive and determination to his legal practice, which is focused on civil litigation and family law.

Michael recognizes that each claim and client is unique – some are better suited for alternative dispute resolution, while other claims need to be aggressively pursued in court. In civil litigation, Michael has experience handling builders’ lien matters, debt collection, contractual disputes, employment matters, and civil fraud, representing both plaintiffs and defendants. In family law, Michael’s practice focuses on resolving divorce matters amicably. He promotes keeping his family law clients out of the courtroom, but adapts to the needs of each client. Michael has appeared at the Provincial Court of Alberta and the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench.

Michael also drafts and negotiates leases, and works with his colleagues at Shourie Bhatia LLP on a variety of litigation, family, corporate and business transactions, and residential real estate transactions.

In his free time, Michael enjoys spending time with his family, and playing golf, soccer, and basketball. Michael is also an avid Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Raptors fan.
